Make Your Northern Arizona Portrait Session Pop

My number one rule when it comes to portrait sessions is making sure my client’s personality comes through in their photos, and it seems that that’s often my client’s goal as well. One of the best ways to achieve this goal is by bringing props to your session. Here are some of my favorite prop ideas that I’ve seen:

Working with the Weather: Here in Flagstaff and Sedona, the weather can change drastically. Things can go to blue skies and puffy clouds to monsoons and snow storms almost in the blink of an eye, causing stress around portrait sessions. One of the best ways to work with Mother Nature’s changing weather is by finding fun props to match. Colorful or clear umbrellas, bright raincoats, and fun rain boots can make for some super fun photos (especially with little kids). Bubbling up in the snow or wearing long, flowing dresses in the wind is a great way to add some drama and fairytale elements to your session. We can even shoot in light precipitation if everyone comes prepared!

My favorite prop ideas come from the heart, whether this means DIY crafts or bringing significant items that help tell your story. For example, I just LOVE when clients bring items with their wedding/engagement date, matching sweaters, something related to how they met, or even their favorite beer. For grad photos, it’s always a blast when students bring decorated caps, items related to their major, handmade signs, or champagne to pop open.

If props aren’t really your thing, there are plenty of ways to express yourself with your clothing, too. Your favorite hat or pair of sunglasses, fun makeup, or anything else that showcases what makes you, you makes for super fun photos and a comfortable session.
