Flagstaff, AZ Graduation Photos: What to Expect

I get it - booking your graduation photo session can seem daunting! It’s not easy deciding on a location, time of year, and outfit, all while finishing up your senior year of high school or college. That’s why I’ve put together a list of tips and tricks to answer some of the questions my seniors ask me most frequently.

Many people assume that graduation photos have to be taken on your school’s campus, especially for college students. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. While photos on campus are a great way to showcase the school or university you’ve attended for the last several years, that’s not always the vibe everybody wants. Your photos should showcase you and your journey as a student, after all - so picking a location that you truly like the feel of can make all the difference. I have plenty of locations to choose from for some unique photos!

Another assumption many people have is that graduation photos have to be taken at the end of the school year. Again this is not the case, and it is often beneficial to avoid this. Booking a session too close to the end of the school year can be tricky as many photographers book several months in advance and locations on or near campus get crowded with last-minute senior photos. Try booking your session based on the look of seasons you prefer (snow, wildflowers, autumn colors, etc.) rather than proximity to your commencement. Any time during your last year of school should do!

Lastly, picking an outfit you are comfortable with inside and out is essential. Since I do not count your cap and gown as an additional outfit, you’re free to express yourself through your clothing. We’ll take some photos in the cap and gown if you like, but there will also be quite a few of your outfit alone and peaking out from the gown. I recommend wearing walking shoes between shots and carrying dress shoes for the photos to put on while we’re shooting. The same goes for jackets.

It can also be super fun to bring props to our session. Decorated caps, acceptance letters, items related to your major, and champagne are just a few ideas to let your personality shine through your grad photos.
