It’s never too early to start booking senior picture sessions. In fact, I recommend scheduling as soon as my clients are able and comfortable. While graduation might seem light years away, waiting too long to contact your photographer can cause so much unnecessary stress. Here are a few reasons why it’s always a good idea to book those grad photos sooner than you think you need to.
1. Availability Fills Up Quickly!
The number one reason to book your senior session earlier in the semester is that photographer’s available time slots fill up quickly, especially in the spring. Most photographers who do senior sessions also specialize in other types of portraits and/or weddings, all of which are very popular in March, April, and May. Many photographers also book several months in advance, meaning if you want to take your photos in April, it’s probably a good idea to reach out to a photographer AT LEAST a month or two in advance.
2. Beat the Crowds
If you’re anything like me, it’s much easier to relax in a low-key space than in a crowded one. If you’re planning to take your senior pictures at popular areas in town or especially on-campus, waiting until the last minute can result in an unnecessarily stressful shoot. Ideally, most people would like to avoid waiting in line to take a few photos on the steps of their campus’s Old Main and would prefer to have the area mostly to themselves. This allows for so much more freedom, time, space, and comfort during my sessions. Taking photos before other students even book theirs is a great way to beat the crowds, even if you wait to send announcements or make social posts until the end of the semester.
3. No Added Finals Week Stress
The last thing you want on your mind when trying to have a fun, celebratory photoshoot is final exams. And vice versa - stressing about fitting in grad photos at the last second shouldn’t interfere with your end-of-semester studying and social plans! Senior pictures should be a fun, easy-going experience, and if you’re trying to do them during exam week, it can suck all of the fun out of it.
4. More Flexibility & Time for Backup Plans
Lastly, booking early allows more time for a backup plan. Say for some reason out of our control we need to reschedule (weather, car trouble, construction, emergency, etc.). If we’re booked the day before graduation, there will be very limited options, especially for on-campus sessions. While it’s never ideal to reschedule, booking earlier in the year allows us time for any necessary flexibility or backup plans.
In conclusion, it really is better to book sooner than later for senior pictures. It allows us to have much more creative freedom, unexpected flexibility, and a more relaxed, fun environment.
